Chevron History: The Facts
• Chevron racing cars were designed and built by Derek Bennett from 1965 until his death in a hang gliding accident in 1978. The company continued for 2 years but lacking the hands-on engineering approach of Bennett the company went into liquidation in April 1980.
• All the assets, including all copyright in drawings, components and car body moulds, were bought by a consortium of Scottish racing drivers/enthusiasts who formed Chevron Racing Cars Scotland Ltd. This company produced spare parts for the range of Chevron cars as well as designing and building new Sports 2000 and Formula Atlantic models.
• Chevron Racing Cars Scotland Ltd liquidated in 1983
• All assets of this company including copyright in drawings and materials required to manufacture Chevron racing cars were purchased by Roger Andreason for Chevron Cars Ltd.
• Under the control of Roger Andreason, Chevron Cars Ltd. produced over 50 cars for Formula Ford, Formula Ford 2000, Sports 2000 and Group C categories – as well as restoring a number of the earlier cars and providing a comprehensive spare parts service for owners of a wide range of Chevron models.
In 2006 Chris Smith purchased a majority shareholding in Chevron Cars Ltd., from the owners Roger Andreason and Tim Colman although Tim remained a Director – a position he had held since 1983. Roger and Tim still remained (minority) shareholders in the company.
Over the next five years Chris Smith made a substantial investment in the company and refurbished many of the original moulds, jigs and patterns. Chris Smith also oversaw the construction of around 10 “continuation” B8 and B16 models.
In July 2011 Roger Andreason and Tim Colman bought back Chris Smiths’ shareholding and Roger was re-appointed as Managing Director of Chevron Cars Limited. The team are fully committed to the Chevron name and history, and are still constructing continuation models as well as expanding their provision of spare parts.
• The intellectual property of the original Derek Bennett companies belong to Chevron Cars Ltd.
• Chevron Cars Ltd is not connected to any other company which currently uses the “Chevron” name. Chevron Cars Ltd. has no connection with any of Vin Malkie’s companies. |

TRADE MARK VICTORY FOR CHRIS SMITH'S CHEVRON CARS LIMITED |
 |
Chevron Cars Limited, now owned and run by Chris Smith, has successfully opposed trade mark applications by Vin Malkie's Chevron Racing Team Limited for Chevron B8, B16 and B19 trade marks.
The Intellectual Property Office issued its decision on 25th November after Chevron Cars opposed an attempt by the Malkies' company to obtain trade mark registrations. The Office found that Chevron Cars is "to be considered to be the senior user of the Chevron mark" and refused to grant the trade marks applied for by Chevron Racing Team. It also found that Chevron Racing Team was wrong to believe that the Chevron mark fell into the public domain after Roger Andreason (from whom Chris Smith bought the Chevron business) earlier failed to renew Chevron Cars' previous trade mark registration.
Chevron Racing Team was ordered to pay Chevron Cars' costs.
Chris Smith said: "This Decision is a vindication of my stance since acquiring the Chevron business. We have always owned the original drawings, jigs and components produced by Derek Bennett's original business. The Intellectual Property Office has now also confirmed that we are the senior and true owner of the Chevron mark” |

Chevron Cars Ltd have acquired the ex-Barrie Smith B8. This very original chassis, which has not been seen for over 25 years, has a fascinating history and although in need of a great deal of work to see it back on the tracks Chevron Cars Ltd are ideally equipped to return the car to perfect condition.

In the May 2008 issue of Octane Magazine Tony Dron comments:
|
 |
"The new Chevron B8 shown by Chris Smith at Autosport International in January can only be described as perfection itself. He got Arch Motors to make the chassis out of the correct steel, as used in B8s of 1968-'70. He obtained the correct old-fashioned welding apparatus and he ensured that every bit of the construction was precisely right.
Chris, the founder and former owner of Westfield Cars, bought the rights to Chevron along with the drawings and much of the tooling, and he is justly proud of his B8. When I sat in his car at the show, it looked, felt and even smelt exactly like a new Chevron did 40 years ago. Undeniably it is a beautiful thing." |
